The rich-poor polarization in prehistoric China: a perspective based on burials
Wealth inequality revealed in investigations of archaeological burials is a valuable means to study the evolution of social stratification and civilization. This rich-poor polarization also forms an integral part of economic archaeology. Burials show that when China made its first step towards civilization some 8,000 years ago, there were clear signs of difference in social status but not in wealth. Such a divide in wealth took another 2,000 years to emerge in burial articles, during the late Neolithic period. This second step led to the development of civilization, which eventually happened in most parts of China between the Chalcolithic period and the Early Bronze Age, approximately 5,000 years before the present. These periods saw a gradually widening and intensifying gap in both wealth and social status, with apparent regional differences. In this Quantitative History Webinar, Chinese archaeology professor Jianye Han from Renmin University explores the formation of regional traditions, namely, the Jianghan model that values wealth over status, as opposed to the Central Plains model and the Northern model (both emphasising status over wealth).
