Usury and Markets: Evidence from the surveys conducted by the South Manchuria Railway Company
Unlike many short-lived financial innovations, lending for high interest, or usury, as a notorious financial transaction shows remarkable resilience throughout human history. This leads to some interesting questions regarding the nature and logic of usury and its socioeconomic impact. Dr. Zhan Lin from the Institute of Qing History at Renmin University will share his latest research on usury using the loan data collected by the South Manchurian Railway Company [Mantetsu (Japanese) or Mǎntiě (Chinese) for short] in a special survey series covering over 5,000 transactions across 55 Chinese villages during China's Republican period. The data collected by the Japanese state-owned company is now considered one of the best-organized Chinese household datasets offering comprehensive insights into China's modern history. In this Quantitative History Webinar, Dr. Lin explains how he uses the Mantetsu/Mǎntiě dataset to analyze the market-oriented financial system resulting in high interest rates and to explore its economic impact.
